For hobby birding portraits and landscape macro
I use D4s and afs 300mm f4d and af 180 2.8 all handheld shoots
That is why my gears light 300mm and 180mm
There are 2000 + marathon photographers in Thailand %99 they use monopod.
I never use monopod of tripod.
Also i use for landscape Nikon E series 75-150 f3.5 ais sharp manuel lens

use sharp lens , high IQ lenses.
if your body FX u can use less shutter speed than DX bodies .
If your camera Low light performance high , ucan take better image quality with high iso this makes you can use higher shutter speed than bad low light performance cameras.
I only use full frame bodies.

Use high shutter speed as possible with your targeted iso ( 100-400 -800 etc.)
If you are shooting 10k to marathon shutter speed 1/ 500s up . If shooting football player 1/800 etc.( target iso auto iso up to 10000 for d4s 4500 for others for night stadium shoots )
Car or motorcycle depend on your idea panning 1/60-100 etc car freeze but wheels moving 1/200-250 . Full freeze 1/1000 up ( check your target iso 100-400 max for car racing )
if you are shooting birding keep iso 100-400 shutter speed 1000-2000 up as possible as your target iso. For landscape i keep iso 100 and shutter speed high as possible if handheld.
So most important point is your targeted iso lens mm and high speed.

Lock you arms and body hold your breath .
Better way if possible lean against tree or wall.
Shoot burst mode 2-3 shoots continuously wait shot again.

if so hard to read all just use any lens shutter speed 1/500 -800 and up , iso 100-400 day time on good sunlight.
F numbers if people , birds car or motorcycle if your lens 180mm 2.8 keep 2.8 of 300mm f4 keep f4 for landscape f5.6 to f11 depend on you.

any question fb cesurozkurt. enjoy .

I agree with Scott above about the breathing. I use that technique often. Its all a bit zen but it does work. I breathe in and then breathe out, and on the final steady expiration of breathe I click the shutter.

Another idea I use is to turn your head to the side, raise the elbow and arm, and tuck the camera in to my chest/shoulder with the end of the lense resting on the bent elbow/arm. Hold. Then do the breath..

What I’m trying to incorporate shooting without a tripod, is breathing techniques before shooting, even with burst mode. It’s the same technique with competition rifle shooters use.

Correct for every Sensor is:
t(max) = 1/(f * Crop)
If we take photos with t > 1/2s, I think, a tripod is nessessary! –
Thank you for the great post! –
